Inspirations post- Miss Miller

When planning for our narrative we took inspirations to inspire us and give us ideas on what to include within my narrative. Inspirations can be used as springboards, we can work around these ideas and widen them with our own twists. Inspirations for our thriller clips can be taken from other thriller films, trailers of thriller films and just in general from our ideas.

The first inspiration that I have taken to incorporate into my narrative is from the thriller film Insidious. This film has many things that are conventional to the thriller genre that have inspired me to include within my own thriller opening scene. Such as, low key lighting, jump cuts and long shots. However, the main thing from the film Insidious that has inspired me is the setting. The film is extremely tension building and suspicious, I believe this is because of the setting. As the film is set within a household environment, this gives it highly realistic feel, so when something bad and scary is happening the audience are led believe that it could happen to them at any point. Ultimately, this makes the film more scary and suspicious. Because of the scary effect this has on the audience, I will be using the house setting in my clip also. I will incorporate conventions of a thriller such as low key lighting and blood as well as the house setting to make my narrative as effective as it can be. 

The second film that I watched which gave me inspiration for my narrative is The Conjouring. The Conjouring creates a tense and scary atmosphere through the use of different cinematography in which it uses. It uses many camera shots such as point of view, handheld, high angles, low angles and many more. Through the use of these camera angles, we are able to build relationships with the characters and feel scared for the characters. The main camera angle that has inspired me and which I will be including in my own narrative is the high angle. During The Conjouring when the high angled shot is used, the character is seemed to be smaller than she actually is making it seem she is a victim and vulnerable to what may happen. This makes the film more tension building and thrilling. Because of the effect that it has within this film, I will be using this within my narrative as I believe it will portray the girl as the victim and extremely vulnerable to what is to come. Ultimately this will create the film to be more scary and engaging.

Another inspiration I have got is from the film The Human Centipede. This film has great use of sound to build the sense of enigma and build the tension. The sound heard within this film is dialogue, off screen sound, non diagetic and silence. These sounds have inspired me to include some within my opening scene. The one that I believe has the biggest effect and portrays a sense of fear is the use of silence. Silence used within the scene causes self-concious responses from the audience, it builds up our attention to what is happening and therefore makes us worried. This is effective as we are then fully engaged within the scene and our fear is built up. This has inspired me to include silence within my scene as I believe the audience will be led to feel scared. 

Overall, few thriller films have inspired me to include such things in my own narrative to create a sense of fear.
