Production Roles- Miss Miller

During our filming and editing process for our opening scene, many things need to be done to achieve an effective thriller sequence in which we are trying to achieve. Therefore, within our group we have allocated specific roles to people in order to get everything done and completed. People need to be allocated roles when creating a film in order to make the process organised a quick. The possible roles within creating a film is the director, producer, the actors, directors of photography (cameraman), sound technician, screenplay writer, MES co-ordinators and the editors.

Director- this is

a person who is in charge of an activity, department, or organization.

Producer- a person responsible for the financial and managerial aspects of the making of a film.

Actor- a person whose profession is acting on the stage, in films, or on television.

Directors of photography (cameraman)- A cinematographer is the chief over the camera and lighting crews working on a film, and responsible for achieving artistic and technical decisions related to the image.

Sound techinician-  they are in charge of starting the music for each performance and adding music to the scene when nessecary.

Screenplay writer- A screenwriter or scriptwriter or scenarist is a writer who practices the craft of screenwriting, writing screenplays on which mass media such as films. They are in charge of writing the dialogue for the film.

Mise-en-scene coordinators- This person is in charge of planning where certain things go within a scene that is typical of the genre.

Editors-  the editors are  respsonsible to  select scenes to be shown and putting them together to create a film.

For our opening sequence we have allocated specific roles for each member in our group. This ensures that we all have an individual task and will help us to film and organise the porcess a lot faster than making one person do all tasks. We have also done this as we believe it wouldnt be fair to allocate all the roles to one person and let them do all of thw work. As we have done this, our project is fair. Also, we made up some names in order to make it look professional and so the same names were not repeated over and over.

I am the producer of our thriller, me and my grouped allocated this role to me as I am thought to be a god mathsmatician and i can therefore budget our clip and keep us in order financially. My group decided upon giving me this role as they believe I am very organised. I can also take instructions efficiently and get tasks done, when they need to be done.

The second role in which we allocated was the director. We gave this role to Heather Everingham. Our group all believed that she was the most experienced in managing a team and groups of people. She gives good instructions and gives good advice to people which is why we allocated Heather to be the director.

Freddie Conway is one of our main actors. We have chosen him for this role as he is an extremely good actor and is very dramatic and realistic when he performs. He takes drama as an A level in which is why we believe he would be perfect for this role. Freddie is also very enthusiastic when he is acting and listens to the instructions Heather and myself give him. Olivia Rugely is another one of our actors. She also takes A level drama and takes acting very seriously. She is very hard working and will get the work done when needed to.

Again, we gave Heather Everingham the role of the director of photography (cameraman). We have chosen her to do this role as she is very creative when it comes to filming and we believe that she will chose great camera angles in which we can use to our advantage to create a thrilling effect. Heather knows how to work with the cameras very well and is confident when moving around with the camera which is why we have chosen her.

We have decided that we will all be the sound techinicians. When the editing stage approaches and we have to include our sound, our group will sit down together and discuss the sound that we want to be included in order to create an eerie feel and build the tension. As a group we want to be completely happy with everything that goes into our final clip which is why we have decided to talk about the sound together instead of letting an individual person do it.

As there is very minimal dialogue in our opening sequence, there was no screenplay writer. The only dialogue in which you can hear from the characters is screaming and calls for help. All of our group decided to include this as it creates a fearful sense to the clip and it builds our relationship with the characters.

The Mise-En-Scene coordinators role is split between Heather and myself. We believe that we can both bring our creativeness to the role and create a clip full of conventional mise-en-scene to the thriller genre. When filming, we will assist eachother in where to place certain objects, how we want the lighting, what costumes in which the character should be wearing and so on.

The final role that we allocated was the editor. We gave this role to Freddie Conway. We gave Freddie this role as we believe his best suited to do this. He edited our pleminary task which was good, so, we allocated him to do the editing as he is most confident using the software in which is used.

Filming Schedule- Miss Georgiou

When our group is planning to film for our opening scene, we created a film schedule. A filming schedule is extremely useful to the group when planning an opening scene as it puts everything into one focus so that we know what has to be done and when we will be getting it done by.  This makes the filming process a lot easier for the group as it will make sure everything will run smoothly and avoid any disruptions or potential arguments.

By doing the film schedule we are able to recognise the significance of the deadlines of filming and how much we need to do in certain amount of time. However, as we have created a schedule, it will make the group feel less stressed and we will be able to co-operate better with each other in order to make the film more productive and efficient.

Our filming schedule is what we are going to stick by so then it will enable us time time to edit once the filming has been completed. Editing will make the scene more engaging for the audience when they watch it.

This schedule has extremely helped us to plan when to film. We were able to to see when we was all free, planning dates and times that are acceptable and reasonable for us all. Because of this, we were able to co-operate with each other successfully, showing good teamwork skills.

When it came to filming, we made a few changes to our plan and didn't stick to the timing of the schedule as well as we could of done. We wanted to be precise with our filming and achieve a film in which we were all happy with.We filmed each frame several times so when it came to the editing stage, we were able to pick the best one. Another thing in which changed in our schedule was our actor. Unfortunately, on the days we could all film together our actress Olivia Rugely wasn't able to make it. Therefore, we had to cut her from the opening sequence.

Group Storyboard- Miss Miller

As a whole group, we had a meeting regarding our group storyboard. We all looked at each others individual storyboard and discussed the best parts in which we would include within our final narrative. When discussing the storyboards, we decided to include a part of everyones individual ideas.

The first storyboard we looked at is Freddie Conway's. Freddie's scene seemed to be the most powerful and most realistic which is why we believe its the one that should be used. Within Freddie's opening scene there were many realistic and suspense building moments in which we believe that would create a thrilling clip. Because of this, we Incorporated many of Freddie's ideas in our group narrative. For example, we decided to set it within the kitchen of a house in which Freddie came up with. We believed that setting the scene in the kitchen would make the scene have a more realistic feel and therefore make it more tension rising. This is the main thing in which we have incorprated into our group narrative from Freddie's individual idea.

During our discussion we created an illustration for each frame in which we will want to be in our final clip. The layout of the storyboard allows us to see both the visualisation of what we are saying and then able to describe what we want to include. This shows as a group that we can have an idea then encorportate it fully. The storyboard is effective as is allows us to see how it will look on screen, we can then see if it fits the conventions of a thriller genre and we will also be able to see if it looks effective and fits our target audience.

From our storyboards, it enabled us to put our ideas down on paper and see if they would work and achieve what we want, then, if it didn't achieve the effect that we wanted, we would finalise our ideas as a group and use for planning. As a group, this storyboard will be able to be used a visual aid to base our whole opening scene one. Overall, the group narrative is much more effective than our individual ones as it allows us to know the final things that will be included in our opening scene and as well, we now have something to direct us when we go through our filming process.

Inspirations post- Miss Miller

When planning for our narrative we took inspirations to inspire us and give us ideas on what to include within my narrative. Inspirations can be used as springboards, we can work around these ideas and widen them with our own twists. Inspirations for our thriller clips can be taken from other thriller films, trailers of thriller films and just in general from our ideas.

The first inspiration that I have taken to incorporate into my narrative is from the thriller film Insidious. This film has many things that are conventional to the thriller genre that have inspired me to include within my own thriller opening scene. Such as, low key lighting, jump cuts and long shots. However, the main thing from the film Insidious that has inspired me is the setting. The film is extremely tension building and suspicious, I believe this is because of the setting. As the film is set within a household environment, this gives it highly realistic feel, so when something bad and scary is happening the audience are led believe that it could happen to them at any point. Ultimately, this makes the film more scary and suspicious. Because of the scary effect this has on the audience, I will be using the house setting in my clip also. I will incorporate conventions of a thriller such as low key lighting and blood as well as the house setting to make my narrative as effective as it can be.

The second film that I watched which gave me inspiration for my narrative is The Conjouring. The Conjouring creates a tense and scary atmosphere through the use of different cinematography in which it uses. It uses many camera shots such as point of view, handheld, high angles, low angles and many more. Through the use of these camera angles, we are able to build relationships with the characters and feel scared for the characters. The main camera angle that has inspired me and which I will be including in my own narrative is the high angle. During The Conjouring when the high angled shot is used, the character is seemed to be smaller than she actually is making it seem she is a victim and vulnerable to what may happen. This makes the film more tension building and thrilling. Because of the effect that it has within this film, I will be using this within my narrative as I believe it will portray the girl as the victim and extremely vulnerable to what is to come. Ultimately this will create the film to be more scary and engaging.

Another inspiration I have got is from the film The Human Centipede. This film has great use of sound to build the sense of enigma and build the tension. The sound heard within this film is dialogue, off screen sound, non diagetic and silence. These sounds have inspired me to include some within my opening scene. The one that I believe has the biggest effect and portrays a sense of fear is the use of silence. Silence used within the scene causes self-concious responses from the audience, it builds up our attention to what is happening and therefore makes us worried. This is effective as we are then fully engaged within the scene and our fear is built up. This has inspired me to include silence within my scene as I believe the audience will be led to feel scared.

Overall, few thriller films have inspired me to include such things in my own narrative to create a sense of fear.

Risk Assessment- Miss Georgiou

When planning to film our opening scene, there are a number of things we had to look at before we started to film. We planned a risk assessment to keep hazards minimal when filming and to prevent any accidents from happening. Risk assessments are important in the film industry as the cast and film crew should feel safe while the film is being filmed and produced. Risk assessments on the set of films let people know what to keep an eye out for and how to prevent these risks from happening.

Risk assessments are also important because they provide a plan for a safe filming setting. Safety rules are created for the film crew to follow and are aware of hazards and risks in the working place. They can identify who may be at risk and where this risk may happen. In order to know this, the filming process will have a minimal chance of risk as we know what risks may happen and where and therefore trying to avoid them. However, if a risk does occur we can then know what to do to overcome it and move on.

As you can see in my risk assessment, the chart has a list of the potential risks in which could happen and we have have found what precautions are needed in order to prevent it from happening.

My risk assessment will help our group into successfully filming our narrative without any risks from occurring. However, if a risk does occur we will know how to overcome it and move on from what has happened.

Planning Editing Styles- Miss Georgiou

When planning for our group narrative we have to plan precisely what we will be including within our clip. In this post I will be discussing the editing styles that our group will use in our final clip. Editing within films makes sequences more effective and engaging for the audience. Editing also allows the 'Three 'S'' to take place, shock, surprise and suspense. The potential editing styles that we could include within our clip are straight cuts, jump cuts, montage, linking shots, fading, kuleshov effect and many more. However, the editing styles we have decided to use are:
- Jump cuts
- Fading
- Blurring out the background
- Montage
Including a few others.

Jump cuts are used when the film wants to quickly and suddenly focus on something. We have used this style of editing within our clip in several frames as we believe it will add excitement and create a chaotic effect whilst focusing on one part of the film. The first time in which you will notice a jump cut is when the hob on the fire turns on. The jump cut here will imply to the audience that something bad is going to happen with the fire, but yet, still making it seem that everything will be fine because there is a sense of realisation and are led to believe that possible nothing bas is going to happen. This ultimately will make the scene more engaging as the audience start to focus on the fire and start to question what is going to happen next to the person within the house. Jump cuts are conventional to the thriller genre as they build the suspense and tension as we start focus on certain things. Jump cut used within our clip will create a relationship between the audience and the victim as they start to feel sympathy towards her and want her to be careful around the fire.

The next editing style we will be using is fading. We have used this when the screen fades to black and will portray danger or that something is going to suddenly take a dramatic change for the worse or something may jump out at the audience creating a scary atmosphere. This editing style has helped our narrative to achieve suspense and shock. It has also created tension as when the screen goes to black, we are unable to know what may happen next. It also makes the audience sit on edge and gets them ready for something to take a dramatic twist from reality and normality to disruption and death. The fading into black is conventional to the thriller genre as the colour black is associated with danger. The danger portrayed here may mean is will result in death.

We will also be using montage. This is when editing is quick, the shots are quickly put together to create excitement. We have used this specific editing style as it joins lots of different frames together at a fast pace. We are using this editing style to make a heartbeat sort of pace, the clips will get faster and faster, just like a heartbeat. We have done this to make sure the audience are more engaged and and pay more attention to the film due to the fast pace of the film. This will create a relationship with the audience as they are engaged with the film, paying attention to the little detail, feeling on edge for the victim and hoping nothing bad will happen to her.

Target Audience Results- Miss Miller

When planning our opening scene to a thriller film, we handed our questionnaire to 40 people, asking what people expect to see in thrillers to inspire us to then put specific things into our opening scene.

The first question in which we asked on the questionnaire is 'Are you Male or Female?'. We asked this in order to know which gender people who answered the questionnaire were and we could then see if the different genders prefer different things to each other and we could then include specific things within our scene which adheres to the taste of both genders.

The next question in which we asked was what age certificate do you watch the most. In asking this question, we were able to see which age certificates where watched the most through all ages and genders. In order to know this, we were able to then pick easily what age certifcate to base our opening scene on. Our results concluded that the certificate watched the most was 15, meaning that, our opening scene will have an age certificate of 15.

The thrid question that we asked was 'What interests you in watching a thriller?' we gave tick boxes giving several answers in which they could chose from. Suspense, tension, plot, villain and other. However, suspense was the answer in which got the most votes being 12 out of 40. This ultimately gives us an idea of what interests the audience in watching a thriller meaning that we will include suspense in our clip making it enjoyable for the intended audience to watch.

The next question was one in which links in with the previous question, we asked, 'what do you expect to see in a thriller?'. We again gave tick boxes giving answers in which you could pick from. The answers in which we gave were, good plot, villian, victim, low key lighting, blood, girl, iconography, death and murder. The answer in which had the highest result was death. This gives us an idea of what the audience would like to seem in a good thriller, therefore, we will include death within out narrtative. Blood being the second highest answer, we will include blood also.

We then asked a closed question of 'do you like sequels?' we gave simple tick boxes of yes or no. The majority vote was no. We asked this question in order to know if the audience would watch another film in which leads on from ours.

Overall, asking these questions to people, we were then able to know what people wanted to see within our thriller and what we have to include to make it as scary as it could possibly could be. Getting a wide range of answers allows us to include an element that everyone would like to see not just a certain age group.

Planning Cinematography- Miss Miller

When our group is planning to film our opening scene, we have planned the different cinematography and camera shots we will use within our scene. Planning the cinematography allows for our group to film easily and know where to place the camera at different points within the scene.

The importance of cinematography within films is key, different angles of what is happening along with effective editing produces and excellent sequence. Cinematography gives different views of what is happening making the film more enjoyable to view, and in some points within thriller films, more scary for the audience as the camera angle presents to us an uncomfortable image.

The first use of cinematography in which we will use in our scene is the use of a high angled shot when the girl is in the kitchen. We have chosen to use this high angled shot here as it shows the girl smaller than she is which portrays to the audience that she is in danger and that something bad may happen to her. We hope that this shot will portray the girl to be vulnerable in her surroundings and ultimately portray her to be the victim. High angled shots are conventional to the thriller genre as it presents characters to be smaller than they are creating a mysterious tension within the film. The high angled shot will help the audience to build a relationship with the girl as we feel on edge for her and we ultimately feel scared on her behalf. The audience will also begin to feel uncomfortable for her also as we are unsure of what may happen next within the scene. We have decided to include a high angled shot in order to provoke emotions from the audience, such as fear and worry, making them more engaged within the sequence.

The second cinematography shot in which we will be using is the use of a long shot. We will use this when, again, the girl is in her kitchen, dancing oblivious to what is happening in her surroundings. Within the long shot, we are able to see all of her body and her surroundings. As her surroundings is the household enviornment, this gives the scene a sense of reality. This will ultimately portray fear within the film as we begin to believe it could happen to us and again making the girl seem extremely vulnerable and victimized. It will portray enigma as we are unable to know what may jump out at her at any point making the scene more thrilling. Long shots are conventional to the thriller genre as the characters are made to seem vulnerable, increasing the fear as we are unable to know what may happen. The use of the the long shot here will help the audience build a relationship with the girl as we feel on edge for her, hoping that nothing bad will happen to her.

Another cinematography element we will be using is point of view. Using point of view in our scene will help portray fear and suspense. As we are doing the point of view from the killers perspective, this will create horror within the film as we are able to see everything in which the killer can see, this ultimately makes the audience believe that they are taking part within the film. Therefore, we hope that this will portray fear and a sense of relaisation to the audience and they begin to begin to sit on edge. Point of View shots are conventional to the thriller genre as they make the audeience believe they are taking part and this increases the thrill and suspense. The use of the point of view shot within the opening scene will allow for the audience to build their relationship with the character. The audience will primarily feel scared for the girl within the house, and hope that she will survive as we believe she is innocent because of the way.

We we also have use of zooming in and zooming out in which is another cinematography element. We will be zooming in to the girl when she is dancing in her kitchen. Zooming in and moving towards the girl creates importance and draws our attention to her and we are fully focused on her. Zooming out creates distance and detatchment to what is happening. We will be zooming out from the boyfriend when he gets killed, this will create emotion for the audience as we feel uncomfortable to what we are seeing.  Zooming in and zooming out from certain objects are conventional to the thriller genre. Zooming in allows for the object or character to be focused on creating suspense and horror.

Planning character representation- Miss Georgiou

When planning to film our narrative, in our group we planned how we are are going to present our characters and how we are going to represent them to the target audience. The characters will be represented to the audience by their clothing, body language, hair and make up and background.

The main character within our narrative is an 18 year old female named Olivia Harris. She is a white British girl who lives in England. Her Dad works abroad most of the year, her Mum is constantly busy at work and she is an only child. Hence why, during our narrative, Olivia is home alone. We have made Olivia be home alone during the scene as we believe it increases the fear and it also makes her seem vulnerable and seen to be the victim. It also makes it seem that if something bad is to happen, she has no one to help her. Again, increasing the fear and tension. Olivia previously had an abusive relationship with male named Luke Moore. The purpose in why we have included Olivia in our narrative is to give the scene a sense of reality, making the whole narrative more realistic. She is the victim within the film which is also why she has a purpose within out narrative. She appeals to the audience because the audience in whom we are trying to target, are the roughly the same age as her, making the audience feel vulnerable too and also on edge to what may happen.

The next character in which we have included is a 19 year old male named Jack Edwards who is Olivia's boyfriend. Again, he is a white British male who lives in England. He is a severely bullied boy in whom lives with his younger brother and has to care for him as his dad is an abusive alcoholic and his mum is dying. Through the way he is portrayed and the way in which he acts within the scene, we are able to see that he is nothing like his father and is a nice boy. Ultimately, he is seemed to be a caring, loving character who is innocent. The purpose in why we have included this character is to portray him as innocent and loving, also, to increase the shock to when he gets murdered as the audience wouldn't expect it. This character creates a relationship with the audience as we sympathise with him, feeling sorry for him and therefore hoping that nothing bad happens to him. He will appeal to the audience as they will see him as a teenage boy, similar age to the target audience, and some people will be able to relate with him.

The third character used within the scene will be the killer. He is a 21 year old male who's name is Luke Moore. He is the ex-boyfriend to Olivia Harris and is extremely mentally ill because of his troubled childhood with his abusive and alcoholic parents. He became very abusive towards Olivia, which is why the relationship ended. He is also very paranoid due to the amount of drugs in which he takes. We have made him older than the victims to make it seem he is suprior over them and ultimately to make him intimidating over them also. Luke is very important to the scene as he is one of the main characters and he is the person in whom murders Jack. This makes him an extremely singnifigant character and is made to seem that we should be scared and weary of him. The purpose of including him within our narrative is to create fear and suspense and making the audience feel on edge. However, we believe that he will not have any appeal to the audience as he is a horrible character.

Research into the history of thriller films- Miss Georgiou

A thriller is a film that uses suspense, tension and excitement as the main elements in which stimulate the viewers mood giving them surprise, anxiety and/or terror. Over the years the thriller genre has vastly changed and improved with the help of special effects and modern day technology.

1920's:
A man named Hitchcock made his first thriller in which was his third silent film in 1926 this was called 'The Lodger' a Jack The Ripper type story filled with suspense. However, because there is no sound within this movie, there is no tension and suspense unlike today where sound plays an important role in creating the fear within thriller films. Also, this film is in black and white so therefore couldn't use specific colors to present the victim and the villian. Hitchcock's next thriller was 1929 was a film called 'Blackmail' this was notable for being his and Britain's first film with sound. Blackmail displays many stylistic elements and themes with which Hitchcock would become associated,  particularly he had a fascination with male sexual aggression and female vulnerability which later on shaped the modern day thriller.

1940's:
Hitchcock continued to direct thriller films and in this year he directed one which won an Oscar in which was called 'Rebecca'. It is about a self-conscious bride who is tormented by the memory of her husbands first wife who died, called Rebecca. This clip doesn't necessarily scare the audience as the 1940's didnt have the use of technology we have today, however we do connect and engage with what is occuring within the scene. For instance, the cinematography used helps us engage to the scene. The camera is zooming into the house making the audience focus on it and makes us believe that the house will play an important role within the film. Sound also plays a big part in this clip as we cannot use colour to present certain things so therefore sound enforces what is happening within the scene. This is shown to us when the use of the non diagetic sound says 'last night'. This gives the audience the time frame of the film and enforces what is being shown to us on the screen in more detail as there is no colour used to present clearly what is going on. Although color couldn't of been used, they have tried their best to use different shades to present things. When the girl and the man are talking, we are led to believe that the man could possibly be the villain due to the dark clothing he is wearing and that the women is the victim as we is wearing light clothes presenting her to be vulnerable and innocent.

1960's:
Hitchcock carried on to direct films and in 1960, released a disturbing film called 'Psycho'. Its about a secretary who steals $40,000 from her employer's client, who then goes on the run and checks into a remote motel. Over the 20 year period from the 1940's Hitchcock had introduced more conventions to the thriller genre. For example, this clip is set in a shower, inside a house. This is conventional tot the thriller genre as it makes the the film feel more realistic therefore enhancing the fear in which the audience would feel. Another convention used is that the killers identity is hidden presenting mystery and suspense and therefore making the audience sit on edge as we don't know who it is and how they got into the house. Iconography is also another convention as it is typical to what we should expect to see within the genre.

Cinematography is also used within this clip from pyscho to present fear. From 2:07-2:15 the camera zooms into the rain of the bath. This connotes the girls life fading away slowly and therefore makes the audience feel sympathy towards her and feel shocked to what has happened. Also, another cinematography point that has been used is zooming out. The camera zooms out from the girls eye once she is dead, this creates an emotional distance towards the girl. They have done this to present sadness and leads the audience to feel sorry for her.

From now, technology improved over the years and now directors and producers could use bigger and better sound effects in their films. Most importantly, colour was now introduced.

Planning mise-en-scene- Miss Georgiou

Mise-en-scene is a vital part witthin a thriller film. Setting, costume, facail expressions/ body language, lighting and colour and the positioning of characters and objects, all help to create fear and tension within the thriller genre. Without these elements in mise-en-scene, there would not be anything to make the film on.

Setting:
Our group has decided to base our narrative within the house, mainly within the kitchen. We have decided this because we feel that it is a realistic enviornment in which leads the audience to believe that it could happen to them at anytime, therefore, increasing the fear within the scene and building tension and insecurity. Because of the setting, it feels more realistic to the audience and they can build relationships with the characters. The characters are seen to be in danger and vulnerable and the viewers are led to feel uncomfortable and on edge on there behalf. Overall, we have decided to set our clip within the house as we believe that it will be scary for the audience and create a sense of reality which will increase the horror. We also believe that the house is conventional to the thriller genre in which is another reason to why we have set it in a house.

Costume:
The costumes in which the characters will be wearing are varied. The girl in whom is cooking in the kitchen will be in her pjyamas or causual clothing to represent the vulnerabilty to the audience. Again, because of the clothing in which the girl will be wearing, it will potray everyday life and therefore making the audience suspicious of what may happen next. When we show the killer in the scene, he will be wearing a mask as we want to keep his identity hidden as it is very conventional to thrillers. Because of the hidden identity and the mask in which he will be wearing, this creates enigma and suspicion within the scene. He will also be wearing black and dark clothing, this symbolises death and his dark personalilty which leads him to kill people. The mask and dark clothing ensures that we dont give much away about him, which again creates suspicion and tension. The husband of the girl, in whom the killer murders, will be wearing normal, casual clothes again to present a feel of everyday life.

Iconography:
The key iconography in which our group has decided to use within our narrative is the use of a knife which will be used to kill the husband coming home from work. The knife is used as the murder weapon, which the killer stabs into the mans stomach. The knife is conventional of the thriller genre as knifes are the typical murder weapon within this genre. The use of the kinfe makes the audience believe that something bad is ultimately going to happen to the girl. Also, there will be use of typical iconography, things that we expect to see within the household. For example, when she is cooking, we will be able to see pans and cutlery in which she will be cooking with. These things are all typical of the household enviornment and create a sense of real life therefore, when something bad happens, the audience are even more scared as it extremely realistic.

Lighting and Colour:
When planning our narrative, we concluded that we would be setting our scene at night, therefore low key lighting would be in use. We decided to use low key lighting as it is very conventional to the thriller genre as it builds suspense and fear. Low key lighting hides and limits the detail in which the audience are able to see and therefore creates a mysterious eerie atmosphere. The audience are led to think what may happen next and what the outcome may be as we cannot see everything clearly. Low key lighting ultimately brings more suspense and fear to the film and makes the audience feel a sense of uncomfortability.

Positioning of characters and objects:

When out group were planning the positioning of the characters, we carefully planned out where our characters would be placed. When she is cooking in the kitchen we decided that we would have a high angle and a long shot. By showing the girl within her sorroundings and portraying her smaller than she is, conveys to the audience her vulnerabilty making it seem as if she is the victim and something bad is going to happen. This is conventional to the thriller genre as the victims are always shown to be small and vulnerable. We want to create a sense that she is the victim and extremely targeted, in which we intend to do with these camera shots. This will allow the audience to build a relationship with the girl as we feel scared on her behalf, feeling uncomfortable for her. We have also thought about where and how we are going to positon the killer, we decided to hide the killers identity as it creates tension and suspense within the scene. This means that he will always be placed in the frame where we cannot see him. We will use many point of view shots coming from the killer so the audience do not know who he is. Point of view shots are conventional to the thriller genre as we feel extremely involved within the scene and therefore increasing the fear.

Facial expressions/ body language:
Facial expressions and body language play an important within films to portray to the audience how the characters are feeling at a particular point within a scene. In our opening scene we have discussed when we will show facial expressions on the characters at certain times. The first time in which we will show a facial expression is of the girl when she finds her husband dead. With use of a long shot and her facial expression, this gives the audience an indication that she is in an uncomfortable situation and horrified at what she is looking at. Body language will also be used within the scene, when she is in her kitchen she will be dancing, her body language will portray happiness, connoting that she is oblivious to what is happening around her. This is conventional of the thriller genre as the female is always portrayed as innocent and oblivious to what is going on in her surroundings. Because of this, the audience will be able to connect to the film as they feel on edge for the girl because they know what is happening but the character doesn't.

Overall, planning our mise-en-scene will help to ensure that we will make our opening scene as scary and horrifying as we possibly can.

Individual Storyboard- Miss Miller

When planning our group narrative, each member of our group made an individual storyboard. This is to plan how we expect our final narrative to look like. As each member made one, we can then see how all of us plan our opening scene to look like. Then, put together all of our ideas begin to create our narrative in which we all believe is as scary and as tension building as it could be. Also, the individual storyboard allows for changes to our narrative to be made. If a member of our group has included a key, useful point, we can then add that to our narrative and adapt on our idea.

In my storyboard, I have included where each frame will be set, what camera angle we are using, the iconography that will be used, the lighting that will be seen, what actors will be used, the sound that we will include and how we are going to edit that frame and a decription of the narrative. Each of these points will then help us when filming our frames in what needs to be done and therefore, we can get it done effectivley, not wasting any time and filming the correct things in which we need.

My storyboard includes five frames on each page, on all which i would include within my narrative. It gives a detailed description of each frame, giving information about what camera shot I would use, the location in where it would be set, if any iconography would be used, the lighting which we could see, actors included, the editing style we would use and then finally a narrative description, giving a description of what would happen within that frame.

My first page includes the first five frames of my narrative. Overall, the first five frames show a person walking towards a house, of which we don't know anything about. In the second frame we are shown the girl in the house cooking and preparing food. We are able to know more detail about what is happening and through the use of the detailed explanation, when it comes to filming we can create an extreme thrilling sense.

The second page of my individual storyboard we are given more details about the girl and what she is doing. As the frames progress we are able to know that the killer has entered her house and now the girl is running away from him. The chasing scene and the uneasy movements of the camera, it builds tension and suspense to what may happen.

Within my individual storyboard and when deciding what to include within my storyboard. I took inspirations from many thriller films in which I had recently seen or had seen before. The main film in which I took my inspirations from to include within my storyboard is Insidious. The household setting in which is used within the film, I believed to be a great influence in order to make the film as scary as possible which is why I included it within my narrative. The household setting will create a suspense and tension building feel to my opening scene making it seem more realistic for the audience.

Storyboards are used when film making to give the film crew a visual idea of how the film will look like. Therefore, can plan and prepare for the film in advance. Storyboards can also help prevent a lot of wasted time when filming a movie. The director knows exactly what to look and film for so therefore, the camera man will not film anything unnecessary to the narrative. This makes the filming process quicker and efficient.

In my storyboard, I have included where each frame will be set, what camera angle we are using, the iconography that will be used, the lighting that will be seen, what actors will be used, the sound that we will include and how we are going to edit that frame and a decription of the narrative. Each of these points will then help us when filming our frames in what needs to be done and therefore, we can get it done effectivly, not wasting any time and filming the correct things in which we need.

I believe that my storyboard is as effective as it could be. Each point has a detailed descroption of what needs to be done and why it will be done. When filiming our clips for our opening scene, my individual storybaord will help in to making the process as easy and quick as possible. I also believe that my storyboard is as helpful as it could be, each point is descriptive, which helps our group know what to do and why it has to be done.

Preliminary task- Miss Georgiou

In my group there are three members which include Heather Everingham, Freddie Conway and myself. The purpose of the preliminary task was to create a one minute clip using the cameras for the first time, we got  to see how they work and we also got to use the tripods, how to set them up and how they work. The clip had to include dialogue between two people, only briefly and it had to demonstrate the 180-degree rule.

My task involved finding a place to film a brief bit of dialogue between two people. We had to set up the camera and tripod to how we wanted then begin to film. The purpose of doing this was to enhance our understanding of how to use the technologies we would be using when creating our thriller sequence. When doing the preliminary task, we looked at different used of cinematography and also, began to look at how to use the editing software we would be using.  My group and I looked into the various camera angles when filming the preliminary task, for instance, when Freddie walks into the the music block we use a long shot of only his feet. By doing this we learnt how to successfully do this and would be useful if we were to include this angle within our thriller as we knew how to do it. We also used high angled shots and close ups within our clip.

Another part of the preliminary task that we had to do was edit our clip after we had finished filming. We put our memory card into the computer, chose our clip and began editing. Whilst editing we were able to see how the software worked and what would have to be done to create a successful opening. As we had a whole lesson to complete the preliminary task, we were aloud a good insight to the software, allowing us to see the aspects of Final Cut Pro and to navigate around the programme.

During this task, I learned how to successfully use the camera, how to zoom in and out and how to place the camera onto the tripod, which is a skill that will i take with me when we film our thriller sequence. My group and I all also learned about how the tripod works, we managed to place the tripod in the places that we needed and how the camera clips on to the tripod. This was important during the task as when it comes to filming our sequence, it would become a quick process as we would all know what to do with the camera and tripod. Our group also learned how to edit on the computers, although, we didn't get very long to edit, we all now know the basics of how to edit a clip.

Some struggles that we faced were when we were trying to film. When we had filmed what we needed and we had to click the button to stop recording, the camera went jerky and therefore looked messy. However, to overcome this, when editing we edited it off to make the clip more fluent and professional. We also had problems when trying to edit, as we had never edited before, we had to learn quickly how to edit simply to make our clip as good as it could be. However, we soon overcame this issue as we quickly caught on to the concept of how to edit.

The prelimnary task will help and assist our group when making our opening to a thriller. As we now know how to menouver the camera and tripod and correctly place them into the positions that we need, we will be able to successfully use different camera angles when filiming to create fear and build suspense and tension. We also now know how to edit clips into the correct length in which we need, meaning that we can use both quick and slow editing within our clip.

Group narrative- Miss Georgiou

In order to create an opening scene of a thriller film, we must have some understanding of what we want to include in our sequence to make it as effective as we can. The purpose of the group narrative is to see what ideas our group members have and to eventually put our ideas together and create the narrative in which we will be using.

When we got into our groups, we were able to see what each others ideas were. When discussing our individual ideas with one and other, we shared our ideas by talking about them and showing each other our notes in which we have written about our narratives. One member of my group illustrated what he wanted to do and were able to clearly what he included in his individual idea. Another member of my group showed us her blog in which she wrote about her narrative.

Heather Everingham's, a member of my group, idea for her individual narrative includes a schizophrenic women who hears noises and name calling in her head. She is lead to go through torturing tasks in order to save her sister and her mother. The person who is leading these tasks is hidden behind a mask and therefore his identity is hidden. At the end of the scene the mask is taken off revealing who the person is. This idea presents advantages and disadvantages to us. The advantages of this narrative is that it has many character and therefore will create tension and suspense. The idea is unique and it will engage the audience and it also includes a lot of gore creating an uncomfortable for the audience. However, the disadvantages are that its complicated and not everyone will understand what is going on. It will also take a long time to put together and it is highly unrealistic meaning that it may not be as scary as we would want.

Another member of my group, Freddie Conway, presented his idea to us through illustrations. His idea includes a young female victim cooking in her kitchen. There is a murderer within her house but she cannot see him as she is too oblivious to what is going on around her. The killer then turns round the corner and stabs the girl to death. The advantages of this narrative is the use of the handheld camera shots that we would use to create a sense of chaos and urgency. It is also set within the house making it more realistic and believable for the audience which is an advantage. There are also disadvantages, these include, that its only two characters used so it would be rather short in length as we cannot include more characters to build up time. Also, it is a very cliche, simple idea that is typical of the thriller genre. This is what people would expect to see within the thriller genre and therefore will not find it scary as they know what is to come next.

My narrative is about a young girl walking her dog in a forest during the late evening. When she is walking her dog she hears rustling in the leaves as if someone is following her. However, she ignores it and thinks that it is only the trees. We are shown shorts clips of the killer following and stalking the girl from a distance. He pulls out a picture from his pocket and it is the female character. The killer hunts her down and kills her and the dog. At the end of the scene, we are given zooming out on the Dog's collar and the girls hat. The advantages of my narrative is that it is very suspense building. It also has a good plot that will engage the audience. There could also be good use of cinematography that would create tension and fear. For instance, a high angled shot would make the girl look small and vulnerable. The disadvantages is that this idea is also very cliche for the thriller genre and it is very predictable. There is also danger when filming this as it is late at night and a unsafe place to film.

For our narrative, we will be including a bit of all of our ideas combined together to make an opening that is as scary and horrific as we can. We will be mainly focusing our narrative on Freddie's and my narrative. There will be a girl cooking within her kitchen, she then tries to look for her boyfriend who she find to be dead. She then goes into a sense of panic running and screaming around the house, however, she does not know that the killer is in the house plotting to kill her too. The killer then finds the girl, however, he doesn't kill her, we just see the killer lurking in the background, behind her. There will then be a black screen with the movie title to pop up to leave the audience in suspense and creating enigma.

When looking at our group narrative, we researched into the narrative theories. There are three in which we have looked at. The first in which we looked at was a theory by Vladmir Propp, according to Propp, all characters have a narrative function, they provide a structure for the text. He believed that all characters had a function to play. The main characters are, the hero, the villain, the donor, the dispatcher, the false hero, the helper, the princess and her father. Another theory in that we looked at was Todorov's theory. Tzvetan Todorov simplified the idea of narrative theory whilst also allowing a more complex interpretation of film texts with his theory of equilibrium and disequilibrium. He states that the fictional environment begins with a state of equilibrium and then suffers disruption, disequilibrium. The new equilibrium is produced at the end of the narrative. The last theory that we researched was the theory of Aristotle. He believes in literary criticism, that a scene should include main points. Incident, dramatic question, character goal, atagonist/ protagonist, stakes, resolution and sympathy/ empathy.

The theory in which links into our narrative is the theory of Vladmir Propp, as we have included vital characters within the scene such as the victim, boyfriend and the killer, all playing a vital role and all having a function to play. Our narrative also links with Aristotle's, this is because it includes a dramatic question, who is the killer? why did the boyfriend get murdered? Also, the audience may feel sympathy and empathy towards the characters.

Opening scene analysis- Miss Georgiou

Within this post I will be analysing the opening scene of Halloween released in 1978. The purpose of an opening sequence in the thriller genre is to set the scene to the audience, because of this we are able to engage with the film and ultimately, this gives an indication of what is to come within the film. Also, the opening sequence gives the audience the time frame of the film and therefore sets up enigmas. In this post I will be analysing what is noticed within the opening scene of Halloween.

When looking at the opening sequence, I noticed that there was use of cinematography to present to us the vital things in which is occurring within the clip. For instance, when the film begins there is use of zooming in to the house. This makes the audience primarily focus on the house and leads us to believe that the house will be the main setting within the film and also the zooming in to the house makes us think that something bad will happen within the house, portraying the house as vulnerable. This belief is proved correct in when the girl gets murdered in her bedroom. The zooming in makes the audience scared for the potential people that may be within the house, therefore making us sit on edge. This is is suitable for the intended audience as it creates the fear and suspense in which the film is intended to do. Another cinematography element in which I noticed when analysing this clip is the use of point of view throughout the whole opening. We are given the point of view from the killer, allowing us to believe that that something bad will happen and that potentially he is looking for someone as we are shown around the whole house. Also, because of the use of point of view, we are given an emphasis in the knife when the killer picks it up. This leads the audience to believe that someone is going to get hurt and therefore makes the intended audience to feel scared and uncomfortable to what may occur. Overall, cinematography is used within thriller films to enhance the fear that is presented to the audience. It creates emphasis on certain things and therefore makes the audience fully engage to the film.

Another element in which is used within the opening sequence to engage the audience is the use of sound. We can hear the clock strike which is a diagetic sound. The clock is symbolised to be the girls life coming to an end, each strike of the clock presents the girls life coming closer to and end. This brings fear to the audience and makes them feel scared for the girl, allowing us to build a relationship with her. The audience are also made to feel worried and therefore feeling rather uncomfortable to the outcome. This diagetic sound is suitable for the intended audience as it builds up the tension and also allows the fear to build up within the opening. Another sound in which is heard is a parallel sound, which is the piano that matches the killers footsteps. Because of this, we are able to know clearly what is going on. It is made to seem more realistic and therefore builds up the fear and tension within the scene. The audience are ultimately made to feel scared and on edge due to the footsteps. Off screen sound is also used in the opening sequence, when the children are chanting to what seems to be a rhyme but can be mistaken for as the same rhythm as a spell. This gives the audience the idea that the film could include characters such as children who could either be a victim. Also, because we cannot see where the noise is coming from, it makes the audience feel vulnerable to what may happen. Overall, sound is conventional to the thriller genre as we are given a wide insite of what is occuring within the scene, it also creates fear and suspense to the audience, ultimately making the film scary.

The representation of characters is seen in the opening sequence. Being introduced to the main characters of the film makes the audience aware of why the characters are important to the opening and that particular moment. In the opening sequence we see a young, in love couple who are oblivious to the fact that someone is watching them from outside the window and then inside the house. It shows a typical feature of a thriller because ultimately the victim is unaware of what is going to soon happen and therefore represents the characters at this point as vulnerable and unknowing, therefore creating a sense of enigma. Leading the audience to feel scared and on edge for the characters. At the end of the opening sequence, the masked killer gains his identity when he takes off his mask. When his mask is taken off, we are able to see that it is a young boy. This creates shock for the audience as we wouldn't expect a young boy to be holding a knife and kill somebody. This makes the audience feel nervous and uncomfortable to what happened within the opening as the represntation of the character is seen to be too innocent and vulnerable to do such thing. Both representation of characters are seen to be effective as they are suitable for the intended audience. Because the victim is teenager, the intended audience are led to feel that this could happen to them and makes the sequence more realistic. Also, the young boy is not what we expect to see therefore builds up the enigma.

The narrative used within this opening sequence is something in which is typically used within the thriller genre. For example, we can see it is set within a house in a suburban area giving the impression something bad is going to occur within the house and that it is a main feature of the film. This makes the audience feel vulnerable as it is making them believe it could happen at any time to them and therefore make them nervous to what may happen next. Also, the fact that there is a murder within the opening sequence, makes the audience more aware to what may occur within the rest of the film as a murder is a strong convention of the thriller genre. This then builds up the mystery as to what may happen next.

Throughout the opening sequence there are conventions used. For example, there is low key lighting used up until the murder takes place and then it changes into high key lighting, the change to high key lighting is used to highlight what is going on within the scene and makes the audience focus on the murder. This also builds the relationship between the audience and the characters as we are led to feel sorry for her and also feel vulnerable on her behalf. A blonde, female victim is also another convention is used within the opening. This is typical of the thriller genre as she is portrayed as innocent and oblivious to her surroudings making it seem something bad will eventually happen to her. This leads us to wonder who the killer is, is he going to kill her? This builds up the enigma within the scene and allows the audience to build a strong relationship with the girl as we feel vulnerable for her and sympathise with her. Another convention used within the opening scene is the use of shock, suspense, surprise. The use of these three elements make the audience sit on edge and feel more involved within the scene. We are able to build relationships with the main characters within the scene. The suspense makes the audience feel uncomfortable to what may happen eventually. The shock is created when the killer is revealed and it turns out to be a young, innocent looking boy in  which we wouldn't expect.

Overall, when looking at the opening of Halloween I have realized that many conventions are used to build fear and tension. I now know that I can use many conventions within my opening scene to create as much fear and horror as I can.

Research into sound- Miss Miller

In this post I will be researching into the sound used within the clip The Human Centipede. I will be looking at the different sound techniques used within the scene and how they build effect on the audience and how sounds are conventional to the thriller genre as they often create a sense of enigma and build tension.

At the beginning of the clip between 0:02-0:015 there is dialogue between the two characters and one of the characters is screaming. This is diagetic sound with a link to on screen sound. The Dialogue between the two girls is very basic they are saying each others names in a sense of panic. Whilst one girl is trying to escape, the other girl laying on the bed screaming and crying. Because they are making these panicked and scared noises, it builds the fear within the film and creates a sense of panic. It also presents the fear in which the girls are feeling and therefore we are able to build a relationship with them. We are led to feel sorry for them and and it creates a sense of enigma and mystery as we don't know if the girl will escape and what will happen to the other girl. These dialogue sounds that we can hear are conventional to the thriller genre because they increase the fear and horror occurring within the film.

Another sound in which we hear is the man's footsteps walking towards the girl who is locked in the room. This is an off screen sound. The footsteps are the only thing in which we hear when this is happening, this presents the girls life to becoming in danger and to an end. Each footstep the man takes towards her represents the girls life getting shorter. Ultimately, this builds up the shock and tension within the film and therefore allowing for the audience to feel scared and sympathize with the girl. As well, the audience are led do sit on edge because we don't know what the outcome may be for the girl, whether she will escape or not. Off screen sound is conventional to the thriller genre because it builds suspense within the film and makes the audience feel as if something bad is to follow.

In the clip, from the beginning until 1:10 we can hear a non diagetic sound in the background of what is occurring. The constant whirling in which we can hear creates an eerie and spooky atmosphere within the clip creating and building the tension. The sound is very thought provoking and allows for the audience to feel tense and uncomfortable with what is happening in the film. The audience are also led to feel suspicious to what may happen as the music gives the impression that potentially something bad will occur. Non Diagetic sound is conventional of the thriller genre as it creates the atmosphere of the film and builds the enigma. Because the sound is constant until the girl shuts the door, this then emphasizes the silence which is to follow.

The next sound in which I analized in the clip was the use of silence. It is found when the girl shuts the door and locks it in an attempt to hide from the evil man. Silence creates tension within this clip as the audience can't tell now what is happening within the narrative of the film. The combination of the shot of the girl and the silence, causes self-concious responses from the audience, it builds up our attention to what is happening and therefore makes us worried. Silence within this clip also creates and builds up mystery to the audience, we are unable to know what may happen at anytime. From this, we are able to build a relationship with the girl, we are led to sit on edge and feel uncomfortable about the situation, therefore feeling scared and worried on the girls behalf. Silence is conventional of the thriller genre as it builds a tense atmosphere, it creates fear for the audience and sense of enigma in which the film intends to do.

From learning and researching into sounds used in thriller films, I have learned about how different sound techniques are used for effect on the audience. These techniques can help form a better understanding of what is going on within the narrative or it can be used to create a tense and eerie atmosphere. I have noticed that sound plays a big part in the thriller genre which is why I will be using some techniques in my thriller clip. I will not be using much dialogue as it gives too much away for the audience, therefore, I will be using a great use of diagetic, non diagetic and silence within my clip to create a suspicious atmosphere to the audience. Overall, researching into sound has given me a better understanding of what sounds I will be using in my thriller clip.

Research into conventions of the thriller genre- Miss Miller

In this post I will be researching the things you would typically see in a thriller scene, known as conventions. There are many things that are included in a thriller film that we expect to see when when watching a film from this genre, this is what i will be analyzing in this post. The thriller film that I will be looking at is The Strangers.

The first thing I noticed when looking at The Strangers that is conventional to the thriller genre is the use of low key lighting. Straight away, the use of the low key lighting indicates the thriller genre of the film and makes us aware of what may occur later.  The low key lighting is used throughout the clip. It expresses the dark atmosphere which makes the scene extremely mysterious. Because of the low key lighting, the audience are led to feel uncomfortable because it gives the clip an eerie feel. The lighting also is used to hide most of the detail in each frame, this allows for the audience to focus fully on the character. From this, our relationship with the character is built as we feel on edge on he behalf wanting her to stay safe. Low key lighting is conventional to the Thriller Genre because it makes the atmosphere of the film more eerie and suspicious and tends to heighten the alienation felt by the viewer.

Iconography was also used within this scene which is highly conventional to the thriller genre When the girl stands up she is holding a knife in her hand, the use of this knife gives us an indication that something gory and unpleasant will lead to happen. The knife being used is also and indicator of the thriller genre and what we would expect to see. This builds up the tension within the scene because as the audience we don't know what may happen making us feel on edge. Iconography is an important aspect of a thriller film as we can feel certain emotions towards what is happening. We feel scared for the girl yet on edge as to what is going to happen next and what the outcome will be. We also question ourselves to why she has the knife and then who is the person in whom she is going to hurt. We expect to see certain objects on screen when watching a particular genre and the knife is typical of what we would expect to see in this genre.

Another convention in which I noticed was that the film is set in a house. Setting it in a house immediately builds up the fear and mystery within the film because its in such a realistic setting making it seem as if it could happen to anyone and anytime making it more scary for the audience. This allows for the fear and suspense to build up within the film as it has such a realistic feel. It makes the audience feel scared as it is made to seem that it could happen to anyone. Our relationship with the girl is built, again, we sympathize with her because the way that is portrayed to us, it is a horrible situation in which no one would want to be in. The setting of the house within the thriller genre is very conventional because it presents a realistic feel and makes the audience feel uncomfortable.

Handheld movements are also another convention in which is noticed within this clip from The Strangers. I noticed Handheld movements when she opens the door and begins to run away. Immediately this builds up the pace within the clip and create a sense of chaos and urgency. Because of these quick paced shots the audience are led to feel uncomfortable and highly on edge because we are not sure of what may happen next and are led to believe that something bad is going to happen. Handheld movements are conventional of the Thriller Genre because it builds up a quick pace within the film creating urgency and building up the fear.

Point of view is also another convention in which is used within this clip of The Strangers. I noticed point of view within this clip when the girl is sitting on the floor looking over to the window when she hears a noise coming from outside. Point of View immensely builds up the tension within the clip as we are allowed to build a relationship with the character. We feel as if we are taking part of the scene as we can see what the character is seeing and therefore begin to feel certain emotions such as fear and tension. We also feel very uncomfortable as we don'y know what may happen next, just like the girl in the scene. Point of View shots are conventional of the Thriller genre as we can fully engage of what is going on and it brings fear to the audience.

Another convention is the many close ups of her face when she is sitting down on the floor at the beginning of the clip. Close ups portray the fear in which the character is feeling, because we can see what fear she is feeling we are able to sympathies with her.  Because of close ups, the audience are led to feel sorry for the girl and and begin to feel tense as we are unable to tell what may happen to the girl. Close ups within the thriller genre are conventional because they immensely build up the fear and tension within the film.

Individual ideas for a narrative- Miss Georgiou.

When thinking about ideas for the opening of a thriller film, in which I will be doing as part of my coursework, I get my inspiration from the films that I have watched within my lessons and outside. The films that I watched all build tension and suspense which is what I also want to achieve in my clip.

A film that I watched was Insidious. In this film there is great use of low key lighting which gives the film and eerie and spooky feel that makes the audience feel uncomfortable and on edge which I want to achieve in my lip. Low key lighting is extremely conventional of the thriller genre because it gives a sense of spookiness. Insidious is set in house which is extremely realistic, this builds the fear and horror within the film because it makes the audience feel as if it could happen to them at any time. This is also conventional because its extremely realistic, increasing the fear.

I also watched The Shining. Within this film I noticed that there was great use of slow editing, this is shown when "Johnny' is about to axe down the door. Slow editing is used to create mystery and also builds the tension because we never know what may happen to the girl, something could potentionaly happen at any time making the audience feel uncomfortable and sit on edge. Reaction shots are also used in this film, this gives a wide view of what is occurring within the film which presents fear as we can understand fully what is going on. Because of this, the audience can engage fully with the characters and feel the characters pain and fear. Also, the victim in this film is female. This builds the tension and fear because she is seen as an easy target therefore making it seem that something bad will happen which forces the audience to feel uncomfortable and on edge. This is extremely conventional of the thriller genre because females are seen to be most vulnerable.

Sinister is another film in which I have watched. In sinister, the killers identity is never revealed. The hidden identities create mystery and suspense because we never know who it could be which makes the audience start to question who it could be and therefore engaging immensely with the film. Also in sinister, there is use of handheld movements, these movements present chaos and urgency within the film and makes it very fast pace. This forces the audience to feel that something serious and scary will happen at any time. This is conventional in the thriller genre because it increases the fear and horror. There is use of iconography within sinister which builds the fear and makes the audience believe something bad will happen to the victim. This is conventional to thrillers because iconography forces us to believe that something bad will happen even if it doesn't.

The final film I have watched is The Conjouring. Again using low key lighting, realistic locations and iconography. I noticed in this film that there was use of high angles. With the use of low key lighting and a high angled shot looking down on the girl, this makes the audience believe that she is the victim because she is being shown smaller than she is. Also, with use of the realistic location we believe that something bad will happen to her, increasing our belief that she is the victim. High angles are conventional of thriller films because they present the victim clearly and increase fear.

My individual idea:

From taking inspiration from each of these films I have been able to come up with an idea for my narrative. My narrative will include alot of mise-en-scene that are typical to the thriller genre. For instance, I  will set my narrative within a sucluded area, a forest or in a house because these enviornments are realistic and enhance the fear within the scene. I will also be using low key lighting in the location to give it an eerie and spooky feel.

I will also use a teenage female victim in my scene this is because females are seen to be most vulnerable and is an indicator of the thriller genre. The victim will also be a young person, around the age of 15/16, linking it with the target audience, therefore increasing the audiences fear and horror. There will be a killer yet, his identity will be hidden to make it more suspicious and scary.

There will be use of iconography such as a knife. I will use iconography because it is a typical thing we expect to see within the thriller genre and it increases the tension and shock factor within the scene.
